Movie Catch Up

Well, I’m back. I took a longer than expected break and caught up on some movies. Over the weekend, Brooke and I rented Erin Brockovich and Any Given Sunday. I loved the former, liked the latter. I definitely think Steven Soderbergh is one of the most talented directors working today, and brings his talent in equal measure to commercial and non-commercial projects. I predict an Oscar for Steven this year, since nominations for Erin Brockovich and Traffic seem likely. Has it ever happened that one person has been nominated for an Oscar twice in the same year in the same category? I think that’s incredible. As far as Any Given Sunday goes, I enjoyed it about as much as I have any other Oliver Stone film. I like pieces but always find his “epic” style annoying. I also saw Mission:Impossible 2 on my Dad’s new DVD player. Great player, mediocre movie.

Sad news: Six | and | One is shutting down Speech Therapy indefinitely. Let’s hope he can take care of his health and come back refreshed when he’s ready.

O Brother

I saw O Brother, Where Art Thou? last night. Very good. Kind of light, and not as rich as The Big Lebowski but some great cinematography and outlandish characters. George Clooney is better than I expected. Not as much memorable dialogue as is usual with Coen brothers’ films, but a fun movie. The soundtrack is great, too. And check out the Flash version of the website. The navigation is really clever.

Withnail and I DVD at Chapters

You know, I get at least one visit a day from someone looking for the DVD of Bruce Robinson’s hilarious Withnail & I. Probably because I wrote a few months ago about buying it. It’s only available in Canada right now, and there are no special features on this Region 1 only disc, but if you want one, try here (I think they’ll ship anywhere). I’m also going to post a permanent link in the sidebar. I’m joining Chapters’ affiliate programme, so I’ll make a buck for each DVD bought, but it’s also good just to help people find what they’re looking for. And oh yeah, dig that cheap Canadian dollar!!

Gimme Permission

Ok, ethical dilemma. I ordered my boss the Criterion DVD of “Gimme Shelter,” the story of the Rolling Stones concert at Altamont in 1969. He’s a big Stones fan, and I love the film. Now, it’s a combination birthday/Christmas present thing, but I wasn’t going to wrap it. He would have received it just as it got here. Now, it’s here. And he’s in Florida on vacation until Monday. Do I pop it into the DVD drive on the office G4? Just for a few minutes? What would Brian Boitano do? What should I do?
